Watermark to prevent HD piracy

06 Jul 2007 12:13

Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD piracy A US-based firm has made its watermarking technology available to the makers HD DVDs and Blu-ray Discs in a bid to prevent unscrupulous folk from illegally copying their content.

Verance Corporation's licensing program, which already provides content protection technology for major film studios, will now be accessible to Blu-ray and HD manufacturers, the firm announced earlier this week.

Known as VCMS, the watermark system identifies illegally recorded content by way of a digital signal added to analogue audio, and should help to clampdown on piracy.

Nil Shah, chief executive officer of Verance, said: "The new high-definition home entertainment formats enable consumers to experience home video in ways never before possible and create both opportunities and risks for entertainment companies and consumer product manufacturers.

"The Verance watermark technology provides value to all participants in the marketplace by encouraging availability of a broad selection of compelling titles for consumers to experience in new ways while discouraging the use of the emerging formats as a growth platform for piracy."
