Write-once Blu-ray discs launched by Panasonic

04 Jul 2007 15:30

Panasonic launched new write-once Blu-ray Discs and 4x speed Blu-ray player Following the news that Panasonic is to produce a 4x speed Blu-ray player, the firm has announced that it has created a software format that supports it.

Featuring a 4x writing speed, the new write-once Blu-ray discs are speedier in comparison to other high-def discs, which generally rely on a 2x writing speed. The discs are the first of their kind to be introduced to the consumer market, and Panasonic announced their launch yesterday (Tuesday).

The write-once discs have the ability to store large amounts of data, and are available in 25 gigabyte and 50 gigabyte versions. The latter version is dual layer, meaning that recording data can be done more conveniently, without having to turn the disc over.

A statement released by the company said: "Since introducing the world's first dual layer 1xBD-RE Disc in 2004, Panasonic has continued to lead the market and develop the Blu-ray Disc technologies to meet the growing demand for high-speed reading and writing of massive volumes of data.

"The new 4x Discs have the maximum data transfer speed of 144Mbps, which means they can copy a 1GB folder in just one minute, while a DVD-RW (2x data transfer speed) needs six minutes."
