40-inch OLED TV in 3 years?

01 Nov 2007 15:09

Will plasma TVs and LCDs give way to OLEDs? Oh dear oh dear, could a new form of television technology be gearing up to replace LCD and Plasma in the hearts of consumers everywhere? Quite possibly, given the plans that the folks at Samsung have up their collective sleeve.

The firm has announced that it is set to produce a 40-inch OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TV by 2010, affirming its status as one of the growing number of manufacturers who are supporting the new type of set.

OLED technology relies on organic materials which, after an electrical charge is passed through them, emit light naturally. As a result, they use less energy than a LCD or Plasma TV.

Tech-On reports that Samsung is also promising that the contrast ratio will be ten times that of LCDs or plasmas - which, at 1,000,000:1, would be a heck of a lot sharper.

Ho Kyoon Chung, Samsung's executive vice president, recently gave an indication as to how the firm may progress with the technology.

He said: "Following small panels used in 2007, 3.5 to seven-inch panels will be applied to ultra mobile PCs, for example, in 2008.

"Then we will realise 14, 15 and 21-inch panels in 2009 and large 40 to 42-inch full HD OLED TVs in 2010."

Other firms currently developing OLED displays include Sony and Toshiba.
