Beijing boost adds to LCD growth

14 Jan 2008 14:46

This year's olympics could significantly boost flat panel sales The LCD TV market could receive an extra boost this year as many consumers trade in their old cathode ray tube sets for a sleek high definition model - in time for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

According to Reuters, Prudential Investment & Securities analyst Park Hyun said that a number of "favourable conditions" would see growth in the market possibly resulting in a peak in the third quarter of 2008 due to demand for new LCD TV panels.

The news agency also reported that LG Phillips, one of the LCD TV market's largest manufacturers, has reported record quarterly profit and predicts further growth for this year.

Speaking at an investor meeting, the firm's chief executive officer Kwon Young-soo said that demand for larger screens was still growing and warned that "an overall TV panel shortage" during 2008 was likely.

Last month, a review for HDTV.org said that the LG's 32LB75 had boosted the company's credibility in terms of style and performance.
