Best Buy and Netflix backing Blu-ray

12 Feb 2008 13:26

The Blu-ray format is going from strength to strength Best Buy, the largest consumer electronics retailer in the US, has given a further boost to Blu-ray with the announcement that it will be recommending the format across its chain of stores, according to the BBC news website.

The move could be seen as another blow for Toshiba's HD DVD format which was recently forced to drop the price of its players in the face of decreased sales and more studios backing the Blu-ray format.

It is reported that Best Buy stores will continue to supply HD DVD but the company has expressed its intention to display Blu-ray players and discs more prominently.

It has also emerged this week that online rental company Netflix is to phase out its HD DVD stock and instead offer only the Blu-ray format.

Although Paramount and Universal are two of the studios still releasing HD DVDs, Walt Disney, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox, MGM and Warner are now endorsing Blu-ray leaving some experts to predict the demise of the flagging format.

Earlier this month, Woolworths announced it was to become the first UK retailer to drop HD DVD in favour of Blu-ray.
