Is Blu-ray on the cards for the Xbox? Speculation that Microsoft's popular Xbox gaming console could feature Blu-ray in the future has been given a boost this week following a comment from the manufacturer's chief executive.

Following the demise of Toshiba's HD DVD format and Blu-ray's emergence as the future of high definition, Microsoft's Steve Ballmer has confirmed it is looking at ways to support the winning format.

According to Digital Spy, Mr Steve Ballmer said that the company was looking at ways to incorporate Blu-ray - but avoided mentioning any specific hardware choices for the format.

"We've already been working on … device driver support for Blu-ray drives," he said.

"Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense."

The site states that recent news that Sony and Microsoft have held talks that have fuelled speculation that the companies will at some point announce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360.
