Buying tips provided for TV purchasers

21 Dec 2007 16:09

HDTVs come in many shapes and sizes A range of tips are springing up online for consumers confused about which High-Definition television (HDTV) set to purchase.

With HDTV set to be one of the big sellers over the Christmas period and in the January sales, experts are attempting to reduce the confusion experienced by many over the technical jargon associated with purchasing a HDTV.

According to the IDG News Service, buyers should purchase an HDTV that its rated for a pixel density of 720p/1080i, as the majority of broadcasts are now transmitted at 720p. Full HDTVs at 1080p are ideal for those in film and multimedia sectors or avid computer gamers using them with consoles.

Consumers should consider aspects such as usage, screen brightness, plasma or LCD, resolution and other specifications before attempting to buy an HDTV set.

Plasma HD flat panel televisions are slightly more popular with consumers than LCD sets and often offer a better watching experience, in the opinion of the Edmonton Journal. However, plasma screens tend to run hotter and are heavier than their LCD counterparts and do not perform as well in small sizes, such as the 30in and 37in screen sizes for smaller rooms, it states.

LCD screens are brighter, making them ideal for playing video games or connecting to computers and plasma and LCD are largely comparable in terms of price and quality, available in a range of resolutions.
