CRT TVs 'not dead yet'

17 Mar 2008 16:49

The CRT screen may not yet be gone As plasma sales continue to boom and LCD panel technology improves rapidly, one company has advised that cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs are not yet dead.

According to Business Standard, a range of CRT screens could soon hit the stores that in many ways resemble their flat screen rivals and could come with a price that will keep the format in the market.

It is reported that manufacturers such as Videocon, TCL and Onida are all attempting to boost the CRT TV market with models this year and one expert has noted that price will play a major part in this.

Sunil Mehta, director of sales and manufacturing at Videocon, said: "[Consumers are] extremely price conscious yet demanding when it comes to styling. A slim TV is as close as one can get to an LCD TV without paying a bomb."

He added that his firm was hoping to make sales targets of around 500,000 for 21-inch screens and 100,000 for 29-inch models.

Earlier this month, MarketWatch reported that Sony would end production of CRT TVs by the end of March.
