Cheaper PS3 won't help Blu-ray says HD DVD group

Sony announced on Friday, October 5th that the 60GB version of the unit will retail for £349 and will come bundled with two games as of October 10th and that a new 40GB PS3 will retail for £299. The PS3 is capable of playing Blu-ray Discs, and it has been suggested that the lower price of the console will drive sales of the second-gen DVDs.
However, according to the HD DVD group this will have a "minimal impact" on sales of Blu-ray Discs and that the sales of standalone players, not consoles, should be the deciding factor in terms of which format will win the war.
In a statement, Ken Graffeo, co-chairman of the group, said: "The European PS3 price cut will have a minimal impact on the adoption of next generation HD formats. The real battleground is in sales of standalone players and HD DVD is out in front by a massive margin."
