Computer games more popular than ever

08 Jun 2007 16:30

The popularity of computer and video games is continuing to rise An admission of a fondness for playing computer games often comes with a bunch of stereotypes that ultimately label the player as a bit of a nerd.

However, it seems that the idea of most gamers being grotty students or geeky middle-aged fellas locked in their bedrooms absorbed in fantasy world involving witches and wizards or gun-toting busty treasure hunters may be a thing of the past.

Because it has transpired that the huge revenues generated by these computer games is such that the bigwigs in Hollywood are starting to pay closer attention to an industry that is now making as much money as the movie business does.

This is according to Dr Bob Kalwinsky, assistant professor of electronic media communication at Middle Tennessee State University, who believes that the increasing popularity of gaming is linked to its social aspect.

He said: "[Gaming is popular because] it's a social experience, and we're social animals. We want to interact with others, but gaming's appeal goes beyond the interactive aspect. With gaming, you can explore an environment that's different each time you play it and you have a great degree of freedom to explore.

"They're wonderful things, these videogames. They're experiential and you're learning … and no other medium is going to offer you this."
