Figures from Chart Track and ELSPA have revealed that in the first six months of this year, 1.29 million games consoles were sold, meaning sales have shot up by a whopping 113 per cent when compared to the first six months of 2006.
The Nintendo Wii has helped the Japanese gaming giant claim a 40 per cent share of the home console market, which is a huge improvement on last year's figure of just one per cent. Sony consoles made up 39 per cent of units sales, while Microsoft consoles made up 21 per cent.
And what's more, unit sales of software have also been boosted, rising 19 per cent in the first half of 2007.
Games for Sony's PlayStation 2 sold the most units during that period, shifting 6.49 million units in the first 26 weeks of the year.
In comparison, 4.04 million games were sold for the Nintendo DS, 3.14 million games were sold for the Xbox 360, 1.57 million were sold for the Wii and 930,000 games were sold for the PlayStation 3.
