Consoles just too complex?

13 Jun 2007 14:39

Will new consoles need a high-definition TV and a broadband connection? The boss of a leading computer game developer has warned that the next generation of consoles may be too complicated for many users, reports IT Wire.

The chief executive of Square Enix, the firm behind the groundbreaking series of Final Fantasy games, isn't sure the public is yet technologically advanced enough to handle the massive processing power of the new consoles on the market.

Yoichi Wada said in an interview with the Financial Times that his firm is more interested in portable devices and some of the simpler, more entertaining consoles available.

"There is a new breed of gamers in the market - we have to make games for all kinds of people. In the old days, we could just focus on the PlayStation or the GameBoy, but the environment has changed completely," said Mr Wada.

As for the ultra-powerful new machines, he added: "There are too many specs - and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection and a deep knowledge of gaming - these consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years they will fare better."

Strong sales of Nintendo's new Wii console seem to bear out the expert's analysis, although many serious gamers have opted for the fun of the Wii as well as the staggering power of the PlayStation 3.
