Consumers to rely on 'rabbit ears' for HDTVs?

08 May 2007 09:27

Rabbit ears antennas popular with High-definition TVs Purchasing an HDTV, and knowing that you've got your hands on an up to the minute piece of technology, must feel pretty good.

However, according to one US businessman, you may actually be loosing a few cool points when you bring your brand new telly box home - as to get the clearest picture possible you will have to rely on a pretty old fashioned piece of equipment.

Yes, believe it or not, 'rabbit ear' style antennas are making a comeback. According to Richard Schneider, president of Antennas Direct, tuning into over-the-air HDTV is all the easier with said antennas, and consumers are beginning to realise the high quality picture that these 'rabbit ears' deliver.

Mr Schneider told the Associated Press: "Eighty-year-old technology is being redesigned and rejiggered to deliver the best picture quality. It's an interesting irony."

And speaking about his decision to launch his firm, he added: "People thought I was nuts. They were laughing at me when I told them I was starting an antenna company."

However, Dale Cripps, co-publisher of HDTV Magazine, notes that getting good HD reception with rabbit ears is quite dependent on geography. He commented: "You either get it or you don't…it depends where you are."

According to market analyst Gfk, ten per cent of the televisions in UK homes were HD by the end of 2006.
