Demand for Wii outstripping supply

01 Oct 2007 15:00

Buy your Nintendo Wii now! Well mangotangoers, it seems that there are gamers, gamers everywhere and not enough consoles to play on.

That's the opinion of Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime, who has asserted that demand is such for the company's super-fun Wii console that the wizzy machines are flying off the shelves faster than you can say wiimote.

In fact, consumer interest in the platform is so strong that Nintendo has suggested that there may not be enough Wiis out there to satisfy consumer needs in the run-up to the Christmas period.

Speaking to the San Jose Mercury News, Mr Fils-Aime said: "We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record that we won't.

"What I can tell you is that typically, our inventory is lasting a day... I don't think we will know when supply crosses with demand until after the holiday season.

"The issue is not a lack of production. The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on."

Hmm, well, we suppose if you are after a Wii you'd better get your skates on quick!
