Energy efficient LCD plan from Sharp

11 Jan 2008 12:30

It is hoped the new panel will be 50 per cent more efficient Japanese consumer electronics manufacturer Sharp has announced it is to produce an LCD screen that offers an improved contrast ratio and half the energy consumption of a current panel.

Speaking at the company's annual new year press conference this week, Sharp's president Mikio Katayama said the firm was expecting sales of LCD screens to increase by around 10 million in 2008 and the new model would help achieve this target.

"An increase in unit sales does not improve the brand value of Sharp. We want to improve it by bringing LCD TVs with high added-values to the market," he said.

The new screen is expected to be a 65-inch LCD unit that will be 20mm thick at its thinnest part. Mr Katayama confirmed that it would offer a contrast ratio of 100,000:1 with power consumption reduced by 50 per cent.

Earlier this week, Sharp announced it would release a mass-market version of a 108-inch LCD screen, according to Reuters.
