Energy 'should be a factor in choosing a new screen'

Power consumption can be greater on plasma panels Energy efficiency is one are in which consumers looking for a new flat panel TV should focus their attention, one expert has suggested this week.

In an article for azcentral.com, Dave Cherry has called on home cinema seekers looking to opt for a new high definition screen in time for some of this year's sporting events to consider how much energy is being used by their potential new screen.

"A good way to save money and help mother earth is to look closely at your television. I'm not talking about the picture, I'm talking about how much energy it puts out," he said.

He adds that experts have suggested that LCD TVs offer a greater level of energy efficiency and that the need for brighter screens on plasma TVs mean they can often use too much power.

It is noted that opting for LCD will not only mean that consumers will be helping the environment, but they will also see significant savings on future energy bills.

Last week Sharp announced it was to produce an LCD TV that would offer an improved contrast ratio at half the energy consumption of its current screens.
