Flat TVs and fireplaces: A safe combination?

Fireplaces: not the best spot for your new panel Consumers who may have invested in a new LCD or plasma television have been advised that they need to be careful where they mount their screen, baltimoresun.com reports.

In response to a query from a concerned shopper, Roger Newstrom advises that - despite what the sales people might say - putting a flat screen TV above a fireplace is not advisable.

He states that although there is no definite risk that the screen would be damaged from the heat, it is certainly a possibility and that this was reason enough to find a different spot.

"Heat is an enemy of electronics … It's possible it would do nothing. But anything that makes an electronic gadget hotter than the engineers envisioned is a bad idea," he warned.

Earlier this month, Gregg Schwartz of Trage Bros told electronichouse.com that the heat from a fireplace was a risky proposition.
