Flat panels dominate RPTV

18 Sep 2007 15:51

Rear Projection TVs are out...LCD and Plasma TVs are in... Rear projection TVs (RPTV) are being booted out the door in increasing numbers, as flat panel TVs continue their domination of the living room as the centre piece of the 'digital home', a new report has claimed.

Technology research company IDC said that flat panel TV sales have been steadily climbing over the last few months, while RPTV sales have started a downward spiral.

While flat panel TVs can boast excellent resolutions at the smallest of widths, RPTVs are considered by many as cumbersome, possessing poor contrast ratios and making use of expensive but short-lived bulbs.

Although there have been technological advancements to make rear projection TVs more appealing, IDC believes that the RPTV industry is in a state of "irreversible decline".

Eric Haruki, research director of IDC's TV markets, said: "IDC believes the global RPTV industry has already seen its best days, and is therefore not subject to speculation on what could return this market to its former glory."

As flat panel LCD TVs continue their unstoppable march forwards, NEC Electronics has announced that it will be entering the market, offering a new range of high-def TVs with 'expansion slots' that allow for the inclusion of IPTV and other such features later down the line.
