Green flat panel screens 'in demand'

27 Mar 2008 17:33

Are more greener screens on the way? With more people placing an emphasis on CO2 emissions and the effects of climate change more is being expected from flat panel TV manufacturers, according to one expert.

In an article for electronichouse.com, Steven Castle states that even national governments are stepping in to ensure that consumer electronics are designed to do as little harm to the environment as possible.

He adds that plasma screens are guiltier than LCD when it comes to power usage but notes the Energy Star program for the Environmental Protection Agency, believe around 71 per cent of manufacturers currently offer products meeting the minimum requirements.

Katharine Kaplan, product manager of the organisation, told the site: "We think you should get an energy-efficient product that doesn't sacrifice the features and functions that you want."

Mr castle concludes that consumers can expect this trend to continue and that more and more flat panel manufacturers will embrace energy saving technology.

Phillips recently announced that it would have its new, energy-saving Eco FlatTV LCD panel available in the UK in June, HDTV News reports.
