HD players 'need HD panels'

02 Jan 2008 14:15

Award winning HD disc 300 would benefit from a fully HD screen Home cinema fans opting for a HD DVD or Blu-ray system are wasting their time without a decent screen, according to the Herald Sun.

In an article for the newspaper this week, Peter Familari states that consumers looking to experience the best that the new high definition formats have to offer will not be able to do so with older cathode ray tube (CRT) television sets.

He states that for those looking to get the best picture and sound quality from HD DVD and Blu-ray, plasma and LCD panels are the best option as the difference between these and older CRT TVs is "huge".

"CRT TVs cannot display the amount of information used in the highest-quality HD TV programs or Blu-ray movies, which use 1080 lines of information," he states.

He goes on to suggest that there is little point investing in a high-performance HD player if it is going to be connected to a panel that offers only 575 of the 1080 lines of resolution available by the HD format.

Also this week, Mr Familari predicted that the "HD revolution" would continue into 2008 with analogue and standard definition products rapidly "on the way out".
