Happy 7th birthday PS2!

26 Oct 2007 12:57

It looks like the PS2 will be around for a while yet Aww, we love a feel-good story on a Friday. Especially when it's about one of our favourite little gizmos.

So we hope that you will join us in congratulating the Playstation 2 console today for reaching its seventh anniversary in the highly-competitive console market.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) released the entertainment system in North America on October 26th, 2000 and since then over 120 million hardware units and more than one billion units of software have been shipped for the PS2 worldwide.

As such, it is the best-selling gaming platform ever released. Which is pretty cool we think you'll agree!

Peter Dille, SCEA's senior vice president of marketing and PlayStation network, noted the success of the console and added that Sony is definitely looking to its future in the gaming market.

"Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale," he said.

"PlayStation 2 is a perfect example of our ten year product lifecycle promise and is a testament to the design and technology that continues to be at the core of the product. While today's anniversary celebrates PlayStation 2's past, we're very excited for its future."

It is thought that ten million PS2 consoles will have been sold worldwide in the 12 month period between March 2007 and March 2008.
