19 Nov 2007 17:33

It's the first birthday of this nifty console The Playstation 3 console has officially been on the market for a whole year.

Sony's popular gaming unit first went on sale in North America on November 16th, 2006 and since then the Japanese firm has instigated a number of updates and price drops to the Blu-ray enabled machine.

As such, Sony has suggested that sales have increased by a whopping 192 per cent at the top ten retailers in the US.

Blu-ray allows for gameplay with high-definition graphics and the company believes that the inclusion of the drive shows just how dedicated it is to the console.

Sony chairman and chief executive Howard Stringer called the technology "the best high-definition format for consumers, providing superior capacity, next-generation games, more hit movie titles and the best possible picture and sound quality."

"The inclusion of the Blu-ray drive ... reflects Sony's absolute commitment to the format," he added.

Jack Tretton, president and chief executive at the Sony Computer Entertainment America, explained that the PS3's design was based on the desire "to introduce a system so technically advanced that it could stand the test of time and take the industry in a whole new direction, which for PS3 was high-definition entertainment."
