High fashion high-def

Would you disguise your top-notch telly? Anyone who has ever bought a flat-screen TV will know that size definitely matters when you consider where you are going to put it. Particularly if someone else in the household is adverse to a giant TV dominating their lounge.

As such, it appears that some people are taking rather ingenious steps to conceal their beloved tellies - including trussing them up as mirrors or works of art.

According to interior designer Cathy Whitlock, many owners of flashy flat-screens are buying frames, mirrors and special DVDs which help to blend their set in with the rest of the decor of their home.

A piece of mirrored glass which looks "transparent" when the TV is on but "looks like a really smoky mirror" when it is off is a popular choice, as is an art-themed DVD.

Ms Whitlock added: "They've done anything from Chagall to Edward Hopper to great golf courses in the country. And virtually, you just put this little DVD in and you can leave your TV on all day."

One devotee of the school of flat-screen fashion is Scott Strazick, who bought a frame for his TV.

He said: "I do get a lot of compliments when people come through. I still think it's something that's a little bit unique, and definitely draws people's attention once they realize it's a TV to begin with."
