How efficient can an LCD TV be?

13 Nov 2007 18:02

Would you like your LCD to be more efficient? Have you ever thought that your TV could stand to be a bit more efficient? If so, the latest bit of high-tech wizardry from 3M could be just what you are looking for.

The firm has come up with a component which drives efficiency in LCD TVs which is to be revealed at the Display Forum 2007, the European-based display business event.

Vikuiti Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF) is "an innovative display technology" which is capable of producing brightness levels of an average LCD while at the same time "increasing backlight efficiency by up to 50 per cent and TV efficiency by as much as 30 per cent".

A standard 37-inch LCD system requires 16 bulbs to produce its high levels of picture brightness, vivid colour, clarity and definition. The DBEF configured system needs just 12.

Lloyd Cole, European marketing manager, 3M Optical Systems, noted that 41 million tons of coal or 59 million barrels of oil would be saved if every LCD TV purchased between 2006 and 2011 had DBEF.

She added: "We are looking forward to being part of this exciting event, which attracts key influencers and experts from all sectors of the electronic display market. Our objective is to share the benefits of our Vikuiti DBEF technology and highlight the incredible potential savings impact it could have on worldwide energy and resources."
