Japanese firm to offer giant plasma screens

30 Oct 2007 15:00

Imagine a plasma TV bigger than any plasma you've seen before! Small TVs can be just fabulous, can't they? Nestled happily in the corner of a room, beaming out all the things you like to watch best.

However, sometimes nothing else will do the job better that a whopping great monster of a telly - and it seems that one Japanese company definitely agrees with this sentiment.

Shinoda Plasma will start making 142-inch screens early next year. It will do so using technology known as plasma tube array (PTA) which involves sandwiching plasma-filled tubes between control electrodes.

The firm is run by Tsutae Shinoda, who invented plasma technology while working for Fujitsu.

According to the company, the screens will have a contrast ratio of 10,000:1, will support 720p video and when they are supplied to TV makers they will weigh just 60 kilograms, which is considerably lighter than the PDPs currently used in plasma sets.

Once the tellies are available it is thought they will cost tens of thousands of pounds. So, if you've got the cash - and you can get it through your front door - you may soon be able to sit at home and have your own mini-cinema!
