18 May 2007 15:00

Popularity of LCD TV in India increased Back again for more technology news are you? Well, ok, as the weekend is nearly here, we'll be nice and let you have another story.

As we're sure you are well aware, the steady stream of developments in television technology pretty much goes hand-in-hand with an increase in the popularity of the various types of sets available on the market.

More and more people all over the world are eagerly purchasing the latest high-quality TVs, and it has recently come to light that the popularity of LCD televisions in India rocketed in the first three months of this year.

The Times of India reports that figures from Thomson Dialog NewsEdge show that sales of LCD TVs shot up by a whopping 900 per cent between January and March 2007. Overall, sales of colour televisions (CTVs) have also improved dramatically, with 2.87 million sets being sold in the same period - an increase of 46 per cent.

This was partly thanks to manufacturers cashing in on the Cricket World Cup - which took place from March 13th to April 28th - and offering discounted prices to consumers in the country.

Commenting on the popularity of CTVs, R Zutshi, deputy managing director for Samsung India, said: "We are hoping to garner a market share of 50 per cent in flat panel TVs this year and expect the contribution of this segment's sales to our total CTV sales to jump to 30 per cent by 2009 from the current level of 11 per cent."
