LCD panels top CRT shipments

25 Feb 2008 12:55

LCD screens are more popular than ever LCD TV shipments have surpassed the number of traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) screens for the first time, a new report claims.

The study, put together by market research group DisplaySearch, revealed that shipments of LCD panels had seen estimated growth of 41 per cent during the final quarter of 2007 on the previous period, pcmag.com reports.

It was also noted that during 2007 the number of LCD TVs sold globally reached 79.3 million - representing year-on-year growth of 56 per cent and allowing the screens a 47 per cent share of the market.

This compares to the 46 per cent market share for CRT television and shows that more people than ever before are making the move towards upgrading their home systems with a flat panel.

"LCD TVs have become more popular, with consumers choosing them over CRTs … [and] plasma TVs, while trailing LCDs in terms of units sold, also make up a sizeable percentage and are currently considered a better value," the website comments.
