LCDs and plasmas very reliable, says survey

06 Nov 2007 14:39

You can trust a flat-screen TV LCD and plasma televisions are a sound investment because they are so reliable, a well-known product review organisation has determined.

According to a study conducted by Consumer Reports, these fab flat-screen tellies are highly unlikely to need repairs in the first three years of ownership and most repairs fall within warranty limits.

It was found that, on average, these sets have a three per cent repair rate in comparison to rear projection TVs which had a rate of 18 per cent, with a quarter of repairs involving replacing the bulbs.

In terms of specific manufacturers, Hitachi's LCDs and Philips' plasmas were considered to be the least reliable while Panasonic's flat panels were the most reliable.

In fact, the organisation considered the firm's 50-inch TH-50PZ700U plasma as the best flat-panel television it had ever tested.

Panasonic's LCD and plasma sets had a two per cent overall repair rate, while other brands which were low were JVC, Toshiba, Samsung and Sony's LCDs, and Pioneer and Samsung's plasmas.
