Microsoft boss rules out Blu-ray Xbox

17 Mar 2008 16:51

The Xbox seems unlikely to ever be Blu-ray compatible Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Europe has poured cold water on recent speculation that the company plans to produce a Blu-ray peripheral for its Xbox console.

According to the MCV website, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Europe's vice president Chris Lewis states there are no plans to move into high definition disc support on their games system and has suggested digital downloads could be the future.

Previously Microsoft had been behind the HD DVD format, however, the emergence of Blu-ray as the next generation format of choice led to some speculating the company would switch allegiance but this is something Mr Lewis has ruled out.

"My own view is very clear and I know it's shared by other people in Microsoft is that the future's digital downloads now … The future is about people taking their digital content on an online rather than physical media," he said.

Last week Digital Spy reported that Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer had hinted at the possibility of a Blu-ray peripheral for the Xbox when he said the company would support the format "in ways that make sense."
