Microsoft has long-term hopes for Xbox 360

07 Nov 2007 15:00

Will the Xbox 360 be around for a good long while? As a general rule of thumb, you can expect a home console to have a shelf life of about five years.

However, Microsoft appears to be hoping that the old adage that rules are made to be broken will be relevant in the case of the Xbox 360, as the firm wants it to be around for a good few years longer than that.

Reuters reports that the company sees the success of Sony's Playstation 2 as a good indication that shelf life can be extended, given that the console recently celebrated its seventh anniversary on the market.

Mindy Mount, chief financial officer for Microsoft's entertainment division, revealed the company's ambitions for the 360 at a BMO Capital Markets conference yesterday (Tuesday).

She said: "Look at the PS2; they've gone long-time and seem to have pretty good legs on what they are doing.

"It we were able to do that, as a chief financial officer I think that's great, because every year you draw it out you increase profitability."

The Xbox 360 was released in November 2005.
