Microsoft to produce new console?

06 Jun 2007 15:00

Microsoft to introduce new console? As the popularity of the various newfangled game consoles continues to rise (don't pretend that you don't have one plonked next to your TV), speculation about where the technology for the little blighters will go next rises with it.

The anticipation that arises when a brand spanking new console is announced is inevitable, even when nothing has been confirmed. As such, it should come as no surprise that Bill Gates' comments about a new console from Microsoft have caused a bit of a stir.

During a recent panel interview, allthingsd.com reports, Gates was speaking about the rapid rate at which PCs are developing when he said: "As we get natural input, that will cause a change... software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you just can pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it."

And when he was asked by the interviewers if this possible new console would be like the Nintendo Wii, Gates said it would not.

"No, that's not it. You can't pick up your tennis racket…And swing it. You can't sit there with your friends and do those natural things," he said. "That's a 3D positional device. This is video recognition. This is a camera seeing what's going on."
