Networks could 'do battle' over HD channels

03 Jan 2008 17:19

Channel 4 has now launched its own HD service Recent developments in high definition (HD) television have allowed a number of channels to launch their own service and in a new article it is suggested that this sector could become a "serious battleground" for networks.

The growth of HD TV, which has seen more people eager to purchase a new LCD or plasma screen, could mean that viewers may soon see more channels and more high quality content, according to the Herald Sun.

A spokesman for one station set to launch a new HD service in Australia this March said that the sector would continue to thrive as long as viewers were educated on the benefits of the new format.

David Gygnell, chief executive officer of Nine, told the newspaper: "As an industry we need to educate consumers. We need to do a better job of explaining the value of HD … but ultimately, viewers just want the best programs."

In December Channel 4 launched its new simulcast service which allowed viewers to watch its shows in HD using a Sky set-top box.
