New Japanese factory for Sharp LCD TVs

Sharp want more people to be able to get an LCD TV into their homes Fabulous news for all you mangotangoers who can't get enough of LCD televisions - Sharp Corp has opened a second liquid crystal display television plant in Mexico in a bid to meet growing demand for the product.

The electronics giant announced on Tuesday, October 16th that it has built a new JPY8 billion facility on the grounds of its first plant in the Mexican state of Baja California. This is the firm's second such plant and it will start off by producing 200,000 units a month.

In a statement, Sharp said: "The start of operations at Plant No 2 gives Sharp the ability to produce larger amounts of large screen LCD TVs and to supply LCD TVs to the market in a timely manner."

The company also revealed that it will be spending an additional JPY11 billion in the 2009 financial year to boost the new plant's capacity to 400,000 units.

Figures from Sharp indicated that the demand for LCD TVs in North America will reach 23 million units by the end of this year, 1.5 times higher than 2006.

The company's first plant began operations in 1997, making cathode-ray tube TVs. Production of LCD TVs began in 2003.
