New Sony LCD TV factory starts production

16 Oct 2007 15:44

Sony to ramp-up production of Bravia HDTVs with new European factory The newly opened Nitra factory, in Slovakia, which produces large-size high-end Sony LCD High Definition TV sets, will become Sony's main production outlet for LCD HDTVs in the European market.

It is expected that the new plant will reach a production capacity of three million units per year by the end of 2008, employing approximately 3,000 workers.

In August, the Nitra site began producing a new range of Bravia LCD TVs for Sony, a line that is now entering into mass production. Sony also operates factories for European TV production in Barcelona, Spain and Trnava - also in Slovakia.

Takeshi Fukuda, corporate executive of the company's TV Group, said: "The European LCD TV market is the largest of its kind and has a significant growth trend. To be successful for us means to be really flexible and fast. Our target is to achieve the leading and stable position on the LCD TVs market."

According to Display Search, 97 per cent of TVs shipped to Europe in the second quarter of 2007 were flat-panel LCDs. Sony's new factory is good news indeed for people in Europe eager to get their hands on a high definition slice of Sony Bravia goodness.
