New laser TVs to rival LCD and Plasma?

28 Jun 2007 13:06

Choose your TV: LCD, Plasma or laser Technology? With the battle for supreme high-def display still raging, and seemingly being won by LCD televisions, it appears that a new contender is preparing to step into the ring.

According to Mitsubishi, while LCD and Plasma screens may be doing the business in terms of consumer sales at the moment, they could be blown out of the water if (or perhaps that should be when?) the industry's latest innovation hits the shelves.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, the firm's marketing vice president Frank DeMartin revealed that Mitsubishi will be showcasing a laser TV at next year's Consumer Electronics Show in January, and that should Laser displays take off they will "spawn a new category for the top end of the market".

While standard HDTVs use tubes or bulbs that give off white light to generate the colour on screen, laser TV technology makes use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that beam red, green and blue light.

And according to Chris Chinnock, president of market research firm Insight Media, "the lasers produce extremely saturated colours - the red is very red".

"You can create some different architectures in how the light is folded and managed inside the TV, so that you could potentially get a rear-projection laser TV that's six to eight inches deep."
