Nintendo DS WiFi Connection proves popular
31 May 2007 14:43Some five million Nintendo DS users have connected to the WiFi Connection service since it launched in November 2005, demonstrating the growing popularity of online gaming.
Together, they have played more than 200 million separate game sessions on the handheld device, with Pokemon Diamond and Animal Crossing: Wild World among the most popular.
"Nintendo DS gamers globally use Nintendo WiFi Connection as an easy, fun place to find fellow players, all without paying anything extra for the service," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president.
"The milestones represent millions of hours of fun and camaraderie despite miles between players."
The DS has also proved particularly popular with women players - sales to female customers increased by 42 per cent over the last 18 months.
WiFi capability is one of the big selling points for the DS, and a new report indicates that online gaming is set to become a huge market sector in the coming years.
DFC Intelligence predicts that the market will grow to more than $13 billion by 2012.
