Nintendo DS consoles flying off the selves in Japan

25 Jun 2007 12:41

Nintendo DS and the Wii outselling both the PSP and the PlayStation 3 The success of handheld consoles, with their wonderful portable quality and their ability to entertain and quell the boredom of most gamers, is not really surprising. And especially not in Japan, where computer games and consoles have been remarkably popular for years.

With this in mind, you should be interested to hear which particular console is experiencing the best sales in the country (and if you're not, why not? You should be you know.)

According to game magazine publisher Enterbrain and research firm NPD, the Nintendo DS is selling extremely well in Japan, with far more of these consoles being snapped up by consumers than Sony's PlayStation Portable.

Moreover, it appears that the Nintendo Wii is outselling its rival console the PS3 by three to one (in the US it's more than two to one), although the DS continues to outsell the Wii. Overall this means that for the first time the Nintendo brand has broken into the list of the top ten most successful Japanese products.

Mizuho Securities analyst Takeshi Koyama told Reuters news agency: "It is becoming quite clear that Nintendo is taking back its market share from Sony in the console market while well defending its stronghold of portable games."
