No plans for Xbox 360 with built-in HD DVD

24 Oct 2007 15:00

The Xbox 360 will not have a built-in HD DVD player, apparently. Reports suggesting that an Xbox 360 with a built-in HD DVD player is in the pipeline have been rubbished by Toshiba.

The HD DVD founder is supposedly developing the new version of the console along with Microsoft in a bid to match the success that the PS3 has experienced thanks to its ability to play rival Blu-ray Discs.

It was thought that the updated Xbox 360 would also feature a universal MP3 dock, a bigger hard drive and dual TV tuners to make it more appealing to consumers.

However, an unnamed "senior Toshiba executive" has spoken to a gadget site to dismiss the rumours.

Speaking to Stuff, the exec said: "It's got nothing to do with us. But we know Microsoft doesn't want to include the HD DVD so as not to limit the user's experience."

At present, Microsoft sells an add-on for Xbox 360 owners who want to be able to play HD DVDs through their console.

The company, in conjunction with Toshiba, will be giving away five free HD DVDs with every purchase of the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, from now until January 31st.
