Oddball panels add to the 'year of the LCD TV'

31 Mar 2008 17:41

The 'year of the LCD' could be filled with oddities. There are a number of things to suggest 2008 could be the year of the LCD TV but this will also bring with it some flat panel curiosities, it has been suggested.

According to a new article for the PC Mag website, the impending switchover to digital TV and upcoming sporting events such as the Beijing Olympics will prove flat panels could be everywhere - and that this has led to some "oddball LCDs".

Citing recent research from market research specialist iSuppli, sales of LCD TVs are expected to see 14 per cent growth in 2008.

However, although this can go some way to explaining innovative inclusions such as "a built-in iPod dock or webcam", HannSpree and LG have gone one step further.

The former has put together the HannsMilano, which is a 9.6-inch LCD panel which has been incorporated into the side of a "ladies' Italian-style handbag" and the latter has added to their range with something even more strange.

It is reported that the LG Flagtron L1900R comes with a round hole in the stand for the screen which it claims the manufacturer states represents "the image of eternity and communication".

Other "Oddball LCDs" recently noted by the site include Toshiba Matsushita's Circular TFT and Aquavision's Towel Rail screen.
