Planar acquires home theatre firm Runco

01 Jun 2007 11:45

Planar has bought Runco the home theatre firm Home theatre company Planar Systems has acquired Runco International as it looks to expand in the fast-growing market.

US-based Planar wrote a $36.7 million cheque for home theatre producer Runco, which has developed the CineWide technology and Video Xtreme projection equipment.

Last year Runco revealed details of its Signature Cinema SC-1 home theatre system, which uses a light output that means it can be used on screens up to 500 inches wide. Its CineWide technology expands the image so that it can fill screens with no loss of resolution or brightness.

Planar also acquired Vidikron in 2002 and together the companies offer industry-leading home theatre projectors, high performance plasma and LCD video displays, ambient-light-rejecting projection screens and other related technology.

Planar's president and chief executive, Gerry Perkel, commented: "This combination offers us an exciting opportunity to accelerate our reach into the growing global market for high-end home theatre solutions, in line with the strategy we launched last summer.

"Runco and Vidikron are synonymous with excellence in home theatre."

Planar provides specialist software to markets across the world.
