Plasma TV - the best is yet to come

21 Jun 2007 15:00

Plasma TVs to get even better Plasma screens, with their excellent picture quality, black levels and size, are a popular home entertainment choice for savvy consumers looking for a top-notch telly.

However, despite their quality, it appears that they are going to get even better, because according to scientist and plasma TV expert Larry Weber, plasma technology is good, but the very best that it will produce is still waiting in the wings.

During a recent interview with CNET News.com, the retired Pansonic researcher revealed that he believes "the best invention for plasma displays hasn't been done yet", ZDNet News reports.

Mr Weber is well-respected in the plasma field, because as Paul Liao, chief technical officer for Panasonic North America, notes: "You could really say that if it wasn't for Larry Weber, there probably wouldn't be a plasma TV business as we have it today."

The 59-year-old invented the energy recovery sustain circuit, which reduces the power consumption of a plasma screen by as much as 150 watts. He retired from Pansonic in 2004, although he continues to investigate how to further reduce the power consumption of plasmas.
