Plasma favoured over LCD TVs

05 Jul 2007 13:30

Plasma display or a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)? Some people are pretty picky when it comes to the specs of their home entertainment, while others are less concerned with the appearance of their telly and more interested in how it will fit with the decor of their lounge.

However, what is clear is that flat-panel televisions are becoming increasingly popular, and a recent survey seems to suggest that more and more consumers are opting for plasma rather than liquid crystal displays when they do finally decide which TV will match their curtains.

According to a survey conducted by global market research company Synovate across China, Japan, England, France and Germany, around 80 per cent of respondents said they would choose a plasma TV over an LCD TV because they deliver greater overall picture quality, particularly in terms of resolution, speed, colour, sharpness and contrast.

The results show that 88 per cent of Chinese respondents cited a preference for plasma displays, as did 80 per cent of those in Japan, 70 per cent of those in England, 69 per cent in France and 80 per cent in Germany, This Day reports.

An industry official said: "The preference for the image quality of plasma screens came through strongly in larger screens, because viewers feel less fatigue with plasma screens compared to LCD screens at the 40- and 50-inch level.

"What this test really shows is that the aggressive marketing by LCD industry players has distorted public perception past the point of reality."
