Sales of PS3 rise by over 130%

24 Jul 2007 13:27

Sales of PlayStation 3 increased It seems that as much as some gamers profess that money is no object when it comes to getting their hands on the latest top quality console, every penny really does count.

Following Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) decision to drop the price of the 60GB Playstation 3 in the US to $499 (£250), sales have increased by a whopping 135 per cent in the firm's top five retailers.

According to SCEA, the newly priced PS3 has been flying off the shelves in Wal-mart, Best Buy, Target, Circuit City and GameStop during the last two weeks.

Moreover, the figures also show that hardware sales have jumped up by 161 per cent, while software sales have risen by 15 per cent.

Commenting on the increase in sales, SCEA president and chief executive officer Jack Tretton said: "The new price on the 60GB PS3, coupled with our very strong software showing from E3, is certainly paying dividends in terms of impressive sales across the board at retail.

"This jump in sales bodes very well for us heading into the fall as we launch an impressive arsenal of hardware and software, leading off with the new 80GB PS3 in August along with the unveiling of highly anticipated games such as Lair and Warhawk."

The price drop was announced and made immediately effective in North America on July 9th this year.
