Sony: PlayStation 3 will make up lost ground

29 May 2007 17:02

PS3 is Sony's next-generation console Sony may currently be trailing Nintendo and Microsoft in the next-generation console wars, but there is plenty of time for it to catch its rivals, a senior executive said.

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) console is not selling as well as Nintendo's innovative Wii and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, prompting some analysts to label it a dud following the stunning success of the first two incarnations of the console.

Sony sold 1.2 million units between its launch in November and March, far fewer than the 2.1 million Wiis sold over the same period. The Xbox 360 has been available for some time and has sold far more units. The PS3's high price point has been seen as a factor.

However, Jack Tretton of Sony's PlayStation division in the US stressed that the powerful PS3 will be able to weather the initial storm.

Speaking to the LA Times, he said: "We didn't get into PS3 for the first six months of 2007 - we're into this for the next ten years and beyond. A million units one way or another at this point isn't going to worry us."

Analyst Billy Pidgeon of International Data Corp concurred, saying: "The PS3 is ahead of the market, while the Xbox 360 and the Wii were designed for immediate market impact."

The PS3 is the only next-gen console that comes with a Blu-ray disc drive.
