Sony and Samsung launch 8th gen LCD panels

8th gen LCD TVs from Sony and Samsung Sony and Samsung have started shipping what they have dubbed eighth-generation liquid crystal display panels, the firms announced yesterday (Tuesday).

The panels are designed to be used in Sony and Samsung's 46- and 52-inch full high-definition LCD television sets and measure 2.2 meters by 2.5 meters.

Dubbed S-LCD Corporation, the joint venture is operating out of South Korea and it is expected that monthly output will reach 50,000 units by the end of this year.

It asserts that the production of these LCD television panels marks "a major turning point in the market for LCD TVs in the 50-inch class."

Won-kie Chang, chief executive officer of S-LCD Corporation, said: "We have remained a step ahead of the competition in terms of production scale and timing.

"Our sights are now on LCD TVs in the 50-inch class and we aim to lead that segment. Our success with [the] 7G line will continue with the new 8G line operation, and we will grow into the world's largest LCD maker."
