Sony calls time on 60GB PS3

16 Jul 2007 11:48

Sony PlayStation 3 Console: 60GB Premium Version Just when you thought it was looking oh-so-promising for the future of the 60GB Playstation 3, Sony has made a couple of announcements that have pretty much dashed all hopes.

The electronics giant recently cut the price of the console in North America by $100 (£50) to $499 (£250), but has since revealed that firstly, it will not be reducing the price in Europe, and secondly that it will be getting rid of the 60GB PS3 altogether!

Sony revealed the news on Friday July 13th - oo er - confirming that the company will continue to sell only the 80GB PS3 after July. Unlucky for some? Quite possibly, and in particular those who champion the 60GB PS3!

Sales of the 60GB version of the console have sold out in North America after a 50 per cent rise in the umber of units being purchased following the price cut last Monday (July 9th)

Speaking to VG Multimedia, Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai said: "Once that product is gone from the retailer's shelves, then we're back to $599 SKU only. It's not like we have a two price strategy here in the US market. We found out very early on that consumers react mostly to having one SKU as opposed to two."
