Sony cuts price of PS3

10 Jul 2007 11:41

Sony reduces price of PlayStation 3 Everybody likes a bit of a bargain, don't they? Especially on things that they really want to buy, rather than things that they will buy just because it's 30p cheaper than it was last week.

In a perhaps unsurprising move, Sony has announced that it has reduced the price of the Playstation 3. To some this will not be as enticing as, say, discounted baked beans, but to others it will be music to their ears.

The 60GB console will now sell in the US for a recommended retail price of $499 (£250). Moreover, the electronics firm announced that it will be launching a new 80GB version of the console in the US in August.

This new PS3 will have a recommended retail price of $599 (£300), although no date for a European or Japanese release has been announced.

Jack Tretton, president and chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said: "As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered.

"The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold."
