Sony launches white PS3 in Japan

12 Oct 2007 16:19

Sony will be hoping the new 40GB PS3 helps pick up the console's sales Following the announcement that Sony would be releasing a new 40GB model of its PlayStation 3 console, the Japanese electronics giant has unveiled a brand new white coloured console for release in Japan.

As with the other 40GB models, the 'ceramic white' PS3 will not feature backwards compatibility with PS2 titles, but it will come stickered with a reduced price tag of 39,980 yen (about £180), when it is released in stores on November 11th - just in time for the Christmas rush.

This will represent the first official price cut for the console in Japan, although it was reduced in the United States following the Tokyo Game Show.

In Europe, Sony has chosen instead to offer 'value-added' bundles, effectively giving customers extra games or accessories for the same price.

November 11th will also see the launch of the new Sony Dual Shock 3 controllers in Japan. The long-awaited vibrating controller for the PS3 will continue to feature Sixaxis tilt functionality.

Although the 40GB PS3 console was originally announced for Europe, no word has yet been released on the availability of the ceramic white console in European markets. It is likely that the console will be shipped at some point in early 2008.
