Sony to drop RP in favour of LCD and plasma

03 Jan 2008 17:17

Sony could focus on its popular Bravia range Sony is set to pull out of the rear projection television (RP TV) market as LCD TV sales continue to rise.

According to the Yahoo! Tech website, Sony has announced that the RP TV market is proving too expensive and that the technology associated with it is proving to be not profitable enough.

The site states that the company will cease its manufacture of RP TV following the likes of Hitachi and Seiko who have also pulled out of the creation of such sets, according to PC World.

It is noted that despite RP TV's affordable nature and capacity to deliver high quality large screens, profits have dropped significantly as LCD and plasma technology continues to advance.

As well as LCD and plasma televisions, Sony may well increase its focus on the emerging organic light-emitting diode - or OLED - TV sector.
