TV buyers 'should look beyond contrast ratio'

04 Feb 2008 17:14

Various factors should be considered when buying a TV. Potential buyers of high-definition TVs or other big-screen sets have been given some tips on what aspects of the products they should pay most attention to.

A report on SignOnSanDiego.com suggests that the contrast ratio, which is often highlighted as a crucial factor when buying a high-definition TV, is perhaps not such a key consideration.

The contrast ratio is usually a figure between 10,000:1 and 15,000:1 and refers to light-intensity difference between the brightest and darkest colours that the display can produce.

HDTV analyst Mark Kersey told the website: "It's one of those things where it may be the single most important factor in determining the crispest picture, but there's no single standard for measuring contrast ratios."

His advice is for shoppers to purchase a TV that is within their budget and offers crisp picture quality and a design that they find attractive.

The PC Advisor website suggests that if all other elements of a TV are the same, then the shopper should go for the one with the highest contrast ratio.

However, it adds that "all else is seldom equal".
